Today, science has uncovered a little-known secret that will change the way you look at stress management forever! This secret is so profound and powerful that it is being used in hospitals, corporate wellness programs, and by health conscious individuals the world over, not only to stop stress in its tracks, but to enhance general health as well. What is this "secret?" It makes perfect sense. You have undoubtedly noticed this in your own life when you stop and take a deep breath during times of stress. Your body responds to stress by breathing more rapidly and shallowly so it feels good to breathe and relax. But, as you will see, it does a whole lot more than just feel good. So what is "conscious" breathing? Breathing is one of the most unconscious things that we do as humans so conscious breathing can be defined as intentional breathing. That is, purposefully breathing at a particular rate, depth or pattern. Most conscious breathing involves slowing the breathing from the average 12 to 18 breaths per minute (BPM) while increasing the depth. You can find literally hundreds of books and tapes on the subject that teach many different techniques. Of all the different breathing patterns recommended, there is one that has been shown to be almost miraculous in reducing the effects of stress and restoring the body to healthful balance. The Six-Breath Miracle All you need is a timer. It's so simple, it's almost absurd . . . Researchers have discovered that breathing at a rate of 6 breaths per minute using a breath pacing timer for just a few minutes each day can literally restore the crucial nervous system balance that your body must have to function at peak performance. Breath training at this rate has the effect of "re-coupling" your "fight-or-flight" and "relaxation" responses to help you recover from stress and with regular practice, actually strengthens your resistance to the effects of stress. (LINK to RSA) While pacing can be as simple as looking at a watch, the most effective pacers give visual and/or auditory signals for inhale and exhale. In fact, early research using a watch generated more stress in the subjects because they associated the watch with being late or pressed for time. Why is re-coupling your nervous system important? The Autonomic Nervous System, your Stress Control Center, is responsible for nearly 90% of your body's functions. In short, when this finely-tuned system is in disharmony, so are you! You become susceptible to stress-related conditions and, without an intervention that you will use, the effects can be debilitating. Peak performance becomes impossible! Our products are so convenient that you will use them every day. What else does the breath training do? The simple breath training sessions like those provided by ACL's programs have been shown to positively impact many other disorders such as:
